My visit to Kurashiki, in Okayama/Japan

Me in Kurashiki, Japan, at sunset

Today, I’d like to talk about our (my husband and I) visit to Kurashiki, in Okayama Prefecture, which is considered one of the most charming historic towns in Japan.

It was a short stop on our train trip from Osaka to Hiroshima and we got to spend the sunset and the early evening there. In this post, I’m showing you the pictures we took at sunset.

These pictures I took in Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. It used to be a merchant and storage district during Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868).

Kurashiki was under the control of the Tokugawa shogunate, and the area became an important center for storing and transporting rice, which was basically the “currency” of the time.

The white buildings you see in the pictures, which are different from the common housing architecture of the time, were storehouses. Those storehouses are called “kura” in Japanese, that’s why the name of this place is Kurashiki, which means “town/area with storehouses”.

With the advent of modern transportation, which replaced transportation by canals, Kurashiki declined as a business hub, but instead of being destroyed or modernized, it was preserved and now is now a popular tourist destination.

These buildings have been turned into shops, coffee shops, restaurants and galleries.

bare weeping willow tree in Kurashiki, Japan

As we visited the town in the winter, all the weeping willow trees were bare, showing off the sturdiness of their trunks and the delicacy of their branches, which gave the town an air of dark and quiet serenity. As we walked along the narrow streets of Kurashiki, I felt like I was stepping back in time.

In another post, I’ll show you the pictures we took after the sun had set.

➡️ Among all these pictures, I have a favorite one. Can you guess which one it is? Let me know here in the comments. Put the number of the picture.
